Some Parrots Can Be A Real Challenge

Double Yellow Headed Amazon As Pets

Picture
The  double yellow headed amazon is about 17 inches long from head to tail with a square tail and a stocky build. Their native homes are in northern Central America and Mexico.

There are color mutations, but their natural color is bright green with yellow heads and red on the bends of the wings and tail.

They are intelligent parrots that love performing and are good at learning tricks. They have playful and outgoing natures.

Only the African Gray parrot is considered to be better at talking than the amazon birds, and the  double yellow headed amazon is at the top of the list of talking amazons.

Adolescent amazon birds will enter a stage known as bluffing which makes them less affectionate and fun.

The aggressive and stubborn attitude they develop at this stage makes them a real challenge for all but the most experienced parrot owner.

With their independent nature amazon birds can be left alone for longer periods of time than some other species of parrots can. They just need enough toys to keep them occupied while you are away

They still need socialization on a daily basis, but they aren't nearly as demanding of your attention that the cockatoo birds are.

As long as they get enough attention and aren't getting bored amazons don't usually scream that much, but if they do start they can be loud.

The way to keep your parrot healthy and happy is to give it time out of its cage to exercise, explore and play every day.

Amazons love to chew on things, and they are very curious. You need to keep an eye on it while it is outside it's cage or it will either destroy the room or get itself into serious trouble

Your amazon's diet should consist mainly of pellets, fruits and vegetables. Amazons get obese easily and seed have a high fat content. You can give some seeds, but it may be best to use them for training or an occasional treat.

A double yellow headed amazon is a great pet and well worth the challenge it presents while it is in the bluffing stage.

If you thing that these might be too challenging a parrot for you, maybe you should consider one of the parakeet species.
