Some Parrots Can Be A Real Challenge

Getting A Scarlet Macaw As A Pet Parrot

Picture
A Scarlet Macaw is among the bigger parrot species. They are between 32 and 36 inches long, half of which is it's long slender tail

With the yellow band on their upper wings, blue on the tail and wing feathers and scarlet head and body they are very beautiful pet parrots.

Scarlet Macaws have a white upper beak and a black lower beak. The eyes are surrounded by a white, featherless ring.

You should understand that these parrots have a long life span. Typically between 35 and 50 years, with some making it all the way to 75 years.

Scarlet Macaws are one of the more high strung macaws, and their tendency to pinch should be discouraged at a young age or they may develop the habit of biting.

If your macaw is scared of you it will bite when you get near it, so using aggressive techniques like slapping is a mistake because you will only be teaching it to fear you.

They are a bit too high strung to be the ideal pet parrot for a family with small children. All the activity and noise will likely be too hard on their nerves.

If you are careful to properly train both your children and your parrot they can get along fine, but be aware that they don't tolerate other pets, birds or children without the proper training

The noise from a screaming Scarlet Macaw is loud and will drive you crazy.

Try to refrain from yelling at a screaming macaw or giving it a treat or toy to get it to be quiet.

You don't want to be teaching your parrot that screaming is the way to get attention.

Ignore your macaw when its screaming, and when it quiets down reward it with some attention.

It will eventually figure out that that screaming isn't going to get it what it wants.

When handled by someone with experience Scarlet Macaws become very loving, playful pet parrots.
